Judith R. Smith, 72, of Emporia, passed away Thursday, April 22, 2021. She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodie Smith and a son, Brian Keith Anderton.

Mrs. Smith spent her career as a Registered Nurse at Avis B. Adams Convalescent Center for nearly 40 years. She loved all animals and was most fond of the many cats she cared for at her home.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her son, Michael “Tony” Anderton (Brandy); sister, Marilyn Riggan and brother, Kenneth Riggan (Kathy).

The funeral service will be held graveside 2 p.m. Monday, April 26 at Community Center Baptist Church Cemetery, 2360 Ridgecrest Rd, Halifax, NC 27839.

Gary Wayne Davis, Sr., 69, of Skippers, passed away Monday, April 19, 2021. He had recently retired after 21 years’ service with the Virginia Department of Corrections. He was preceded in death by his father, Emmett and stepfather, Jack.

Gary Wayne is survived by his wife, Denise M. Davis; daughters, Tracy Sison (Thiery) and Tanya D. Clary (Al) and son, G.W. Davis, Jr. (Megan); four grandchildren, Jonathan & Anna Sison and Hannah & Luca Davis; his mother, Rose Phillips; sister, Glenda D. Creath (David); his beloved canine companion, Spanky and numerous nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind a large extended family and the many friends made in the ball community and in the time he spent hunting and fishing.

The family will receive friends 5-8 p.m. Thursday, April 22 at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax Rd, Jarratt, Virginia 23867. Interment will be private.

Sylvia Cullins Morris, 86, of Emporia, Virginia, passed away Wednesday, April14, 2021. She worked for Continental, GTE and Verizon phone companies and for 25 years as switchboard operator at SVRMC. She enjoyed her time spent as a member of the Red Hat Society.

Mrs. Morris was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Clayton Morris; her parents, Ella Johnson Cullins and John Cullins; also four sisters and a very dear sister-in-law.

Left to cherish her memory are daughter, Terry Anne Morris Joyner and special friend, Terry Pulley; son Winfield Morris and special friend, Mari; grandsons, Clayton Earl Boles, Jerry Mcintyre and Joseph Mcintyre; granddaughters, Libby and Kiara and numerous nieces and nephews and special friend and helper, Tammy Simmons.

A graveside funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 17 at Greensville Memorial Cemetery.

Mary Carroll Lipscomb, 83, of Jarratt, widow of Charles Lipscomb, passed away Wednesday, March 10, 2021. She was the daughter of the late William and Eva Mae Catlett and was also preceded in death by one son, Marvin Carroll and her former husband, Herbert Lee Carroll; brother, Jimmy and sisters, Mattie and Glenda.

Mrs. Lipscomb is survived by two sons, Mike Carroll (Kathy) and Robert Carroll (Lisa); daughter, Renee’ Moore (Keith) and daughter-in-law, Debra Carroll (Jim); grandchildren, Michelle Carroll, Christopher Moore, Robert “Patton” Carroll (Michelle), Kayla Tisdale (Adam), Bryan Moore, Andrew Tisdale and Blake Carroll (Felicia); eleven great-grandchildren; brother, Gene Catlett and sister, Joyce Plott and a number of nieces and nephews.

Edward C. Velvin, Jr., 78, passed away Wednesday, February 17, 2021. He served his country as a member of the National Guard and retired from the Army Reserve and also retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He was a longtime member of Greensville Volunteer Fire Department as well as Greensville Volunteer Rescue Squad. He was a longtime member of Adams Grove Baptist Church where he served in many capacities.

Mr. Velvin is survived by his wife, Sally G. Velvin; son Chris Velvin (Audrey); daughter, Carol Grizzard (Carl); six grandchildren, Brandon Grizzard (Samantha), David Grizzard (JoJo), Megan Wilson (Josh), Chris Velvin, Jr., Dawn Hibbard and Brooke Velvin; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jean Joyner, Mary Pinner; a brother, Bobby Velvin and a number of nieces and nephews.

Earldean Allen, 81, of Emporia, passed away Tuesday, February 9, 2021 in a local hospital after a brief battle with complications of Covid-19.

She was born April 22, 1939 to John and Gladys Nowell Newsome in Halifax County, NC. Earldean was married to Sonny Allen and worked as a textile worker. She loved the Lord and was a faithful member of Fountain Grove Baptist Church in Emporia attending regularly as long as her health permitted. She loved her little dog, Lilly, gardening, sewing, hummingbirds, baseball and helping others. She was a loving sister, wife, mother, aunt and grandmother. Her family was the center of her world and she was a friend that will be truly missed.

Earldean was preceded in death by her grandparents, James and Floy Nowell; her parents and her husband of 48 years; her sister, Elaine; stepdaughter, Teresa and stepson, Thomas Allen.

She is survived by her daughter, Melissa Allen of Emporia; brother, Haywood Nelson of Halifax, NC; aunt, Myrtle Nowell of Weldon, NC; stepdaughter, Wanda of Pennsylvania; son-in-law, Thomas Edward Allen of Emporia; sisters-in-law, Dorothy, Rosa, and Jean. all of Emporia; and numerous nieces, nephews; great-nieces and nephews; cousins, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life service will be held graveside 2 p.m. Saturday, February 20 at Independence United Methodist Church Cemetery on Independence Church Rd, Emporia, Virginia officiated by Pastor Tom Spizzirri. Due to circumstances of the pandemic, masks and social distancing will be followed.

Kandy Bryant Poarch

Kandy Bryant Poarch, 47, of Pleasant Shade in Emporia, Virginia, passed away Sunday, February 7, 2021. Kandy graduated from Greensville Co. High School, where she also began her education to become an LPN. She later became a RN and obtained her Master’s Degree in Nursing. Kandy has worked locally for over 25 years as a nurse at GMH, SVRMC, and presently served as Director of Nursing of Accordius Health at Emporia. Kandy was a dedicated nurse and is well known for her compassion for others and her patients.

Kandy is preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Byron and Betty Dunn; paternal grandparents, Robert and Pattie Bryant; and father-in-law, Randolph Poarch.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Ron Poarch; daughter, Shirlkay Poarch; son, Bryant Poarch; loving dog, Elvis; parents, Edward and Kay Bryant; brother, Frankie Bryant (Tonya); brother-in-law, Brian Poarch (Mary Beth); mother-in-law, Shirley Poarch; nieces, Sarah Poarch, Jane Poarch, and Natalie Bryant; and nephew, Nikolas Bryant.

A private funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 11, 2021, with private interment at Emporia Cemetery.

Betty Little Delbridge

Betty Little Delbridge, 79, went peacefully to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 30, 2021. Betty was born on April 9, 1942 and was raised in Pleasant Hill, NC and later moved to Emporia, Virginia, married and raised a family.

Betty loved her career as secretary of the Greensville County Public Schools Elementary School where she was devoted to teachers, parents and children. She retired on June 30, 2007 after 25 years service.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Jarman Delbridge; her parents, Jesse Lee and Dora Webb Little; two sisters, Irene Turner and Mildred Pettway; four brothers, Dean Little, Harward Little, Joe Little and Lewis Little.

She is survived by a son, Walter ‘Jack” Deldridge (Melissa); daughter, Betty Jo Ridout (Ray); six grandchildren, Hunter Delbridge (Taylor), Mackenzie Delbridge, Jacob Gwaltney, Samantha Delbrdige, Emily Ridout and Ethan Ridout; a great-grandson, Mason Lee Delbridge, all of Emporia; two sisters, Rebecca Edwards and Verla Rainey (Edward) and a special niece, Sharon Simmons (Charles).

Otis B. Chaffin passed away at the age of 86 on Tuesday, January 12, 2021. Otis was born on March 3, 1934, in Mississippi. He was a retiree of the Georgia-Pacific plant in Emporia, Virginia. 

Otis is survived by his wife of 39 years, Frances Mitchell Chaffin; daughter Sylvia Chaffin; son, Earl Chaffin; step-daughters, Debra M. Roach (Wayne) and Brenda M. Rieley (Jerry); two grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild and four step-great-grandchildren. 

A private graveside funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 16 at Greensville Memorial Cemetery officiated by The Reverend Tom Williams of Adams Grove Baptist Church.

Charles I. “Billy Gene” Gregory, Sr.

Charles I. “Billy Gene” Gregory, Sr., 85, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 6, 2021.

He loved his Lord, his family, his church, and his community and served each one well.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Betty M. Gregory; his children, Donna Gregory, Tammy Gregory Kidd (Garry), and Charles I. (Chuck) Gregory, Jr. (Kim); his grandchildren, Stacy Hardester (Drew), Mark Ferguson (Amanda), Samantha Thomas (Dustin), Charles I. Gregory, III and Claire Gregory; his great-grandchildren, Katie and Darby Hardester, Easton and Gunner Thomas; his step-grandchildren, Megan K. Deal (John), Lovie E. Kidd and his step-great-grandchildren, Ari, Knox and Everlie Deal, Tyler Thompson and Eli Thomas and two sisters, Sandra Comer and Dama Jones.

Billy was a member of the National Guard and a Scoutmaster for many years. He was a member of the Jarratt Volunteer Fire Department and an honorary member until the day of his death. He was a deacon in his church and a member of Jarratt Town Council for many years. Billy retired after 44 years with Georgia-Pacific Corporation as the boiler house supervisor.

A private graveside service is planned.

Johnny C. “J.C.” Ogburn, 76, of Emporia, passed away Saturday, October 10, 2020. He was the son of the late Edward Thomas Ogburn and Willie Daniels and was also preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean Ogburn; two brothers, Wibur “Bug” Ogburn and William “Man” Ogburn and two sisters, Virginia Pauline Prince and Ethel Knapp.

Mr. Ogburn is survived by his son, John “Eddie” Ogburn (Brandy); two stepsons, Michael Pair (Bernadette) and Darryl Pair (Amy); three grandsons, Dylan, E. J. and Jackson Ogburn; eight step-grandchildren, Curt Pair, Stephanie Mitchell (Mike), Rachel Pair, Landen Pair Lizzie Pair, Exia Pair, Brayden Mevins and Sarah Davis; three step-great-grandchildren, Makayla aand Luke Pair and Mckenzie Hamilton; brother, Thomas Ogburn (Judy); three sisters, Betty Romine, Joyce Smith (Harry), and Ella Sims Brumbles and a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 13 at Faith Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Greensville Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends at church one hour prior to the service.

Alyssandra Nicole Reeves, 21, of Stony Creek, passed away Wednesday, October 7, 2020. She was preceded in death by her mother, Tammy Reeves; grandmother, Shelia Bennett; grandfather, Donald Draper, Sr.; great-grandfather, Francis Draper, Sr; uncle, Christian Lee and great-aunt, Donna Whitby.

Alyssandra is survived by two daughters, Kaydence Reeves and Kinsley Tisdale; her father, Steven Reeves (Alicia); sister, Amber Reeves; brothers, Holden and Dakota Lee, grandmother, Devina Draper, her “Nanna”, Marie Lee;  grandfather, Steven Reeves, Sr.; great-uncle, James Grant (Lynn); her boyfriend, Andrew Tisdale; aunt, Tiffany Rook; great-aunt, Connie Story; great-uncle, Sonny Draper; uncles, Donald Draper, Jr., Jesse Draper and Jason Jones and great-grandmothers, Shirley Rowe (Russ) and Virginia Draper.

Pauline B. Moss, 91, of Emporia, passed away Thursday, October 1, 2020. She was the widow of Willard Moss and also was preceded in death by a son, E. Kirby Moss and a sister, Serena Brockwell.

Mrs. Moss is survived by two sons, Danny Moss, Sr. and Darrell Moss, grandchildren, Candice Bowe, Jessica Grant, Brian Blanton, Danny Lee Moss, Jr., Melissa Ann Moss, Lori Story and Vanna Story; 16 great-grandchildren and a brother, Robert Bailey.

The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct 3 at Greensville Memorial Cemetery.

Etta Mae Bryant Jarratt, 81, of Jarratt, passed away Sunday, September 27, 2020. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Jarratt and a grandson, Adam Bryant Harrell.

Etta Mae is survived by her daughter, Joan Harrell and husband, Ricky; sons, Richard Benjamin Jones, Jr. and Benji Jarratt (Hope Pittman); grandson, Eric Jones and fiancée’, Brandy Nickelston; granddaughter-in-law, Samantha Jo Harrell and great-granddaughter, Ava Harrell.

Mary Belle Harrison Parker Nye, 87, of Jarratt, Virginia, departed this life on Sunday, September 20, 2020 to go be with her Father in Heaven, along with many departed loved ones and pets. Born to Claude and Pearl Harrison on July 28, 1933, Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Garland Slade Parker. She was also preceded in death by her son, Garland Slade "Rusty" Parker and her second husband, Abner Alexander Nye. 

At a young age, Mary started her career at Johns-Manville Corporation in Jarratt. She retired from Georgia-Pacific Corporation, (which bought the Johns-Manville plant at Jarratt), after 43 years of service. She also worked as the Town Clerk of Jarratt and eventually became the Mayor after serving on Town Council. She was very active in her community and in her church, Centenary United Methodist Church in Jarratt where she served as Treasurer for many years and was also on several committees. She also served as delegate for the church conference. She was an officer in the Quarter Century Club of Johns-Manville. Earlier in life, she was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Stony Creek Chapter. Mary was an incredibly talented person, as evidenced by her many accomplishments. She used to make her own fresh evergreen Christmas decorations, and even made her children's clothes. Mary loved God, her husbands, her children, stepchildren, her friends and her beloved pets. 

Mary is survived by her daughters, Sherri Dawn Parker and companion, Bill Dutton, Jr. and Sandra Slade Parker York and husband, Peter York of Sault Ste Marie, Michigan and a number of nieces and nephews; step-sons, Paul Nye and wife, Diane and Peter Nye and wife, Valerie. She is also survived by her special friend, Hazel Ann Leonard and her beloved cats, who brought her much company near the end of her life. 

The family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. Friday, September 25 at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax Rd in Jarratt where the funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, September 26. (Please consider all protocols of social distancing and face coverings). Private family interment will follow.

Charles Martin, Sr., 83, of Emporia, passed away Thursday, September 17, 2020. He was the son of the late Wilbur Lawrence Martin and Ruby Gill Martin and was also preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

Mr. Martin is survived by his wife, Betty B. Martin; son, Charles Martin, Jr.; two daughters, Lelia Boney (James) and Tammy Veliky (Stewart); grandchildren, David, Tiffany, Joseph, Lisa and Anthony; four step-grandchildren, Brent, Brad, Eric and Leslie; fifteen great-grandchildren; two sisters, Carol Suggs (Gene) and Martha Blankenship and a number of nieces and nephews.

Evelyn Woodruff Moore, 84, of Jarratt, widow of Wilbur H. Moore, passed away Monday, September 7, 2020. She was the daughter of the late William Albert Woodruff and Verna Braxton Woodruff. She was also preceded in death by brothers, Frank, William “Bill”, Cecil, Charles “Tuck” and Daniel Woodruff and sisters, Sue W. Odom, Betty Jarratt Fitzgerald and Katherine “Kitty” Ehrhart.

Mrs. Moore is survived by her children, Wilbur H. Moore, Jr. (Peggy), Kathy M. Carroll (Mike), Richard D. “Doug” Moore (Sherri) and Albert “Keith” Moore (Renee’); grandchildren, Melissa Moore, Michelle Carroll, Danny Moore, Ricky Moore, Rebecca Moore Chester and Bryan K. Moore; nine great-grandchildren and one on the way; brother, Onnie L. Woodruff (Brenda); sisters, Shelia W. Pierce (Bobby) and Ann W. Floyd (Luke) and a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, September 10 at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax Rd, Jarratt, Virginia where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at High Hills Cemetery.

Audrey Faye Howell, 59, of Emporia, widow of Marvin Wayne Howell, Sr., passed away Monday, August 24, 2020. She was also preceded in death by her father, Jerry Leonard Draper, Sr. and two brothers, Jerry Leonard Draper, Jr. and Donald Wadell Draper.

Faye is survived by two daughters, Sherry Jarratt (Ron) and Tiffany Byrum (Hunter) and son, Marvin Howell, Jr. (Tiffany); eight grandchildren, Stephanie Powell, Chris Jarratt, Natalie Jarratt, Jordin Jarratt, Logan Howell, Conner Howell, Noah Howell and Isobella Byrum; great-granddaughter, Ma’Kenzie Fox; her mother, Virginia Frances Draper, sister, Barbara Woodard and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends 2-8 p.m. Wednesday, August 26 at the home of her son, Marvin Howell, Jr.

The funeral service will be held graveside 11 a.m. Thursday, August 27 at Drewryville Cemetery officiated by the Reverend Jeremy Slagle.
